I was diagnosed a Type 2 Diabetic in 2004 but refused the meds until 2010. My doctor was pushing the startins and wanting to up my diabetic medication when I started eating low carb high fat. I refused. It has been an eye opening experience watching disease reverse in my body.
Sandy Bahr, Creator of the Reversing Diabetes Group on Facebook, asked me months ago to share my story, but I wanted to wait until my anniversary with LCHF. I found the Reversing Diabetes group a year ago. I was reading Bill Rust’s testimony on Butter Bob’s website and he shared about the Reversing Diabetes group. I immediately found it and joined. I joined a bunch of groups then and realized quickly I needed to prune down to a couple. I have loved the educational information that is offered in this group and it is free! When I joined there was a little over 13,000 people. Rory Marshall was a blessing with his experience and wisdom and gave me some great counsel.
I wanted to post my yearly update in June, but felt I needed to wait until I got my bloodwork back. I met with my doctor on the July 21st to go over my results. She was pleased with my results…me too!
My bloodwork before June of 2016 was really not good. I felt so bad and I was just a train wreck. I had no energy and I felt old. Just because I was in my 60s didn’t mean I had to feel it.
These are my numbers a year ago.
June 1, 2016
Weight: 251(Actually started at 265 May 1st eating low fat and drinking shakes. Starved!)

Chol/HDLC Ratio – 5.0
Total Cholesterol – 225 (High)
Triglycerides – 199 (High)
ALT – 120 (High)
AST – 96 (High)
Last fall my doctor started having me do a Cardio IQ blood work up (She thought I was going to kill myself with all the fat.) She was wrong!
This is my latest work up.
Optimal…182… six months ago it was 221. Should be under 200
Optimal…6… six months ago was 60. Should be greater than 46
Optimal…66… six months ago was 92. Should be less than 150

My Lipoprotein were all in the Optimal Range!
Liver ALT and AST both were 19…Optimal!
Inflammation (HS CRP) was 3.0 – Moderate ( I was dealing with diverticulitis when I took this blood work, so I went from Optimal to Moderate.)
Homocysteine was 9.1- Optimal
Hemoglobin A1c was 5.2 – Optimal
Insulin 2.1 – Optimal (Six months ago it was 9.1 and last fall it was 11+.)
Present weight: 188 lbs.
We have not had starches in over a year now and the blood work shows it. I also added some type of activity last year by either walking laps in the pool or the treadmill. I don’t exercise…I do things I enjoy (like walking or swimming) and exercise is not one of them.
I have more energy now than I did in my 40’s.
In the last year I have seen these awesome changes in my body!
No amount of medicine could do this for me. I have called a war on sugar and I refuse to let it have a foot hold in my life. Even my husband is a carb Nazi. He reads labels now. (My hubby eats this way and he also is off all medication now. He bloodwork is beautiful.)
I think the biggest thing the Lord has shown me through these past few months with the moving and building a new house I have been able to sustain this way of eating and not fall off the wagon. There was a lot of stress in prepping the house for the market, packing the first time and then packing when we sold the house. Then have been the trips to the new house (which is 1.5 hours away from where we live now) to meet with different contractors and weekly to our daughter’s for treating an illness she has.
Even when I went to the ER a few weeks ago with a bout of diverticulitis, the doctor started talking about an IV. I told them NO GLUCOSE! They couldn’t get a vein so I took a shot in the hip instead. They were not use to people like me, but they kindly worked with me.
I am so amazed at how far I have come (my hubby also) in the past year, but I have had many mentors along the way through the Reversing Diabetes group, books, blogs and by watching YouTube. There is a wealth of knowledge for us today if we will just be proactive and take ownership of our own health. We just have to remember fat is good and sugar is bad. It makes me sad when I see people eating themselves into sickness and disease. I was one of those people, but thanks to our youngest daughter, Heather, telling us about Keto, we started our journey to wellness.
My encouragement is eat by the food list given by Dr. Westman. Watch Dr. Westman’s video. Glean everything you can from the postings in the Reversing Diabetes group on Facebook and research beyond it even. Be proactive about your health and don’t leave it to your doctor to make the decisions for you without knowing the consequences of the medications.
Until next time!
Please note! I am not giving any medical advice, but only sharing what I have experienced on my personal journey to wellness. Check out my links page for websites, books, and videos that are posted for educating yourself on reversing diabetes and the ailments that come with it. These are links, books and videos that I personally glean from often. I am always trying to educate myself on being healthy. Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.
