We went through the dirty side of Hurricane Harvey a few weeks ago. We weathered it without any destruction, but not so for so many. Leon and I checked the storage units that hold the majority of our stuff other than here at the apartment. It was fine also. We never lost electricity but we were ready for it if we did. We had a water bladder in one of our tubs which holds 65 gallons of good drinking water. We had lots of canned goods that were Keto approved. We had our little lantern and weather radio ready in case we needed it. We were set. Thank God we didn’t need it.
I had felt out of sync being between the sale of the old house and the building of the new house already. The hurricane added to it. It is very hard when you see so much devastation and you cannot do anything about it. There is so much to be done to get back to what was normal for many. Helped where we could, knowing there were so many more that needed it. As I type, Florida has just gone through Hurricane Irma. Where we had major water dumped here in the Houston area, other parts of the Texas Gulf got the brunt of the winds and destruction and storm surge. Florida got the winds and the surge. Both were very destructive.
We are within a week of closing on our new house and there are a lot of trips to the country now. I am always carrying my cup to keep hydrated. I take a diuretic and it’s not safe in Texas to be in the heat and get dehydrated. I found myself drinking mostly ice tea with a sweetener in it. If I was cold I would drink my coffee that was caffeinated. My one bad vice this summer became diet sodas and probably the worse one was Diet Mountain Dew. My blood sugar was fine, but with over eating the protein and drinking the diet sodas, my weight loss has slowed down. I have not gained any weight back but I am not losing as fast either. I need to lose another 50 lbs. But the biggest problem that stemmed from this was getting a horrible bladder infection. After about three days I finally went to the doctor. She put me on an antibiotic and told me to drink cranberry juice. Not on the food list so I am taking Azo which equals one cup of cranberry juice and less than 1 carb. I have lost more weight than I thought. I weighed 180 so I have lost 85 pounds, since June 1, 2016! The Azo stuff was not working by itself and I was miserable. I went to drinking my water and quit the diet sodas and the caffeine which means no tea or coffee. Ugh!
But after pushing the water for the last three days, I had a miserable night last night. I had gotten my electrolytes messed up with getting rid of so much of my potassium and sodium. I remembered the Keto flu prescription which is to get the salt up. I mixed 1 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and drank it down. Normally something like that would be too salty for me. This time it was like my body was craving it and it didn’t taste that salty to me. Within an hour I felt a lot better.
Here is the link on making sole water. After going Keto, I learned salt is my friend. When I was doing the Eat to Live way of eating, we were to cut out salt and fat. No wonder it didn’t work for me.
I have not over indulged in carbs since we started eating Keto, but getting the protein back to the moderation level is my big goal, which means being more intentional about my fat. It has been a struggle for me. I have to say “goodbye” to the diet sodas too. As much as I love my caffeine, I have to keep that down and push the water if I want to free from bladder infection. The paper the doctor gave me said to avoid spicy foods, caffeine and alcohol. I find it interesting I was never told to stay away from sugar and carbs.
When I met my husband, his mother used to suffer from bladder infections a lot. She was miserable. I don’t know where she learned it from, but she started cutting sugar out of her diet. She lost a boat load of weight and she didn’t have problems with the bladder infections after that. She was in her 30’s then.
I knew mine wasn’t from the carbs but as I started checking out some of my habits, I found that the alternative sweeteners, too much caffeine and too much protein and not drinking enough water can cause the bladder infection. There were other things too, but I knew they were not the cause…this time.
My friend, Rena, posted a link on her Keto Girlz ~ 40 + Facebook group that was really good about maltodextrin and other alternative sugars. I am sticking to the Keto approved ones when I do use something. Here is the link she posted.
